Froglife has coordinated the UK
Toads on Roads
programme since 1989. We hold over 20 years of rescue data, with
2010 being the most active year to date when over 75,000 toads
were helped across the nations roads, thanks to the efforts of
over a thousand dedicated volunteer Toad Patrollers.
Despite these successes, there remains much to be done to equip
Britain with sustainable solutions for the future. Furthermore,
the loss of habitat connectivity is not just a British problem,
all over Europe there are animal rescue and/or 'connectivity
systems' in place, to varying degrees. However, there is
currently little sharing of data, information and advice between
most countries, and to date no extensive effort has been made to
coordinate these activities.
With road expansion set to increase across the 27 countries
within the European Union (EU), the problem
of loss of connectivity between habitats will only continue to
escalate, with profound and potentially disastrous consequences
for biodiversity.
Froglife is developing the EU Toads on Roads project to
establish a strong European partnership capable of tackling
these problems at a broader scale. The strength gained through
this cohesion, as well as the lessons learned from shared advice
and best practice, will help unify the voice for sustainable
solutions to wildlife mortality on roads for the future in a
developing Europe.
On 7th-8th March 2012 Froglife is hosting a workshop in
Peterborough where representatives from 12 EU countries will
discuss the issue.
