Spawn and tadpoles Frequently asked questions about frog/toad spawn and tadpoles:
I haven't got any spawn in my pond this year. What might be wrong? Depending on the weather it may still be too early for the animals to be out and about - frogs and toads emerge from hibernation dependent on appropriate weather conditions regardless of whether it is January or April! The other option is that there has been a population decline in the area and there are simply fewer animals around. Amphibian populations fluctuate dramatically and 'spawning gaps' in breeding years can be common in some ponds. Another reason could be that the migration route to your garden has been blocked. In some cases spawn has already been laid but it has been eaten by predators, sunken below the surface or could have died due to cold weather/ disease before you've had a chance to see it.
