Spawn and tadpoles Frequently asked questions about frog/toad spawn and tadpoles:
I still have tadpoles and it's nearly winter, what is wrong? If there are not enough nutrients to go around then some tadpoles will fail to develop in the normal period of 12-16 weeks. In most cases this is because there is not enough light entering the pond - light stimulates algal growth which is what the tadpoles mainly feed on. Very rarely, the trigger for metamorphosis into froglets is missed and the tadpoles remain as they are and overwinter in this form. This is known as neoteny and is more common in newts. More research is needed on this phenomenon - please contact us if you think you have noticed this in your garden.
