Spawn and tadpoles

Frequently asked questions about frog/toad spawn and tadpoles:

There is spawn in the pond but more cold weather is due, should I protect it from frost?

Unless the frost is heavy, in most cases only the top layer of spawn will die.  If it is particularly early in the season the animals may spawn again anyway.

If you choose to protect the spawn you could take small measures such as covering the pond at night or you could actually remove it from the pond and keep it somewhere slightly warmer (in a bucket in the shed for instance) until the cold weather has passed.  If you keep it indoors made sure the water is given time to cool to outside temperatures before carefully putting it back in the pond.
