Tadpoles (c) Froglife

Spawn and tadpoles

Frequently asked questions about frog/toad spawn and tadpoles:

I am filling in/mending/cleaning my pond but it is full of spawn/tadpoles.  What shall I do with it/them?

If possible put off the work until late autumn as this is when there are least amphibians in the pond to disturb.  If you need to carry out the work urgently place the spawn in a tank, or suitable container, of pond water while you do the work and return it to the pond when you have finished.  This can be tricky if the tadpoles have already hatched.

If you are removing the pond you can either transfer the spawn to a friend/neighbour's garden pond (within one mile), or rear the spawn in a tank yourself and release the froglets in to your garden on metamorphosis.

Sadly there is no organisation that will be able to come and take the spawn off your hands.

If you have removed the pond you many find amphibians returning to the garden in the spring to breed.  If you are removing the pond because you have small children you may like to know there are options which allow you to retain the pond.
