Grass Snake (c) Tracy Farrer

Snakes and Slow worms

Frequently asked questions about snakes:

How do I get rid of snakes from my garden?

It is important to remember that Grass Snakes, the most commonly seen snake in gardens, are completely harmless to you, your family and your pets, and trying to get rid of them may mean making drastic changes to your garden.  Also, snakes are often just passing through gardens on their way to somewhere else and will not necessarily take up residence.  Seeing a Grass Snake in your garden is the ultimate reflection of a happy, healthy wildlife garden.  Encounters are often fleeting so cherish it while it lasts!

Grass Snakes feed mainly on amphibians so they are much more likely to be seen in frog-friendly gardens.

Please be aware that Grass Snakes are harmless wild animals and for this reason it is unlikely that anyone will remove Grass Snakes from your garden.

Please also be aware that all of the UK's reptile species are protected against killing and injury.  If you come across cruelty against these species please inform us confidentially.

If your question has not been answered or you require more information please contact the Wildlife Information Service on 01733 558960 or info@froglife.org
