Non-native snakes

Occasionally Froglife receives calls from members of the public who have seen snakes that do not match the description of any of our native snakes. Closer inspection often identifies these as melanistic (lacking colour pigments and therefore almost completely black) or unusually light-coloured grass snakes or adders, however
on some occasions they turn out to be escaped or released pets. If you're unable to identify a snake please get in touch with full description and, ideally, a photo.

If you suspect that the snake you have found may be a released pet please contact the RSPCA immediately.

Pet snakes are rarely venomous or dangerous but do not attempt to handle the snake yourself to be on the safe side.
