Chytridiomycosis
There is currently a lot of research going on into the disease,
in the UK and the rest of the world. Research on
chytridiomycosis is at a relatively early stage, and there are
many areas that are still not fully understood. One interesting
aspect is that many amphibians have been found to carry the
chytrid fungus but suffer no ill effects.
In 2008 Natural England and the Institute of Zoology began
disease monitoring across the UK to assess the threat that the
disease may pose to our native amphibian species. Early
indications are that the disease is not widespread though the
research continues. Various organisations have been involved in
producing guidance for those who work in and around amphibian
ponds to prevent the spread of various diseases and invasive
plants.
