In the late 1980s unusual mortalities of common frogs were
reported in the south-east of England. Frogs were found to be
suffering from a variety of symptoms, sometimes with secondary
bacterial infections. After a dramatic increase in cases in the
southeast throughout the late Eighties, the Frog Mortality
Project was set up to monitor and report on the extent of the
disease - ranavirus - in the UK.
What is ranavirus
(or 'red-leg')?
What are the symptoms?
How can I be sure it's ranavirus the frogs died from and not
something else?
What will happen to the frog population?
Will it affect any other species of amphibian or my fish?
Is there any cure or treatment available?
What should I do?
Where did this disease come from?
What can I do to help stop the spread of amphibian disease?
What is being done about the disease?
Will anyone want to test my frogs / analyse a sample?
