Ranavirus

In the late 1980s unusual mortalities of common frogs were reported in the south-east of England. Frogs were found to be suffering from a variety of symptoms, sometimes with secondary bacterial infections. After a dramatic increase in cases in the southeast throughout the late Eighties, the Frog Mortality Project was set up to monitor and report on the extent of the disease - ranavirus - in the UK.

O What is ranavirus (or 'red-leg')?
O What are the symptoms?
O How can I be sure it's ranavirus the frogs died from and not something else?
O What will happen to the frog population?
O Will it affect any other species of amphibian or my fish?
O Is there any cure or treatment available? What should I do?
O Where did this disease come from?
O What can I do to help stop the spread of amphibian disease?
O What is being done about the disease?
O Will anyone want to test my frogs / analyse a sample?
