Ranavirus is the focus of various research studies. The data you
supply contributes to the Frog Mortality Project, which Froglife
is working on with the Institute of Zoology. More recently it
has been studied through a Europe-wide project (the Rana Project)
carried out by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and
Aquaculture Science (CEFAS).
Between 1992 and 2008, we received information on the deaths of
over 85,000 amphibians from thousands of gardens across the UK.
The data that we receive is extremely important in understanding
how this disease is spread and how severe the problem is. It can
give us a unique insight into amphibian disease that can provide
a basis for better understanding the long-term effects of this
disease on amphibian populations.
If you let us know about a potential case of ranavirus we may
ask you to provide a sample of one of the dead bodies for
analysis. This is an important part of the research into the
disease.
