Common causes of spawn disappearing:
The spawn may have died / disintegrated or sunk to the bottom of
the pond without you noticing; see: common causes of spawn dying
/ breaking down for reasons why this might happen.
All amphibian life-stages form a natural part of the food chain,
spawn is probably the life cycle stage that is safest from the
attack of predators. However, there are many predators in and
out of the pond: newts, moorhens, ducks, insect larvae and fish
will all eat spawn; occasionally mammals like rats, foxes and
hedgehogs will feed on spawn if it is close to the edge of the
pond.
If the spawn has been in the pond for a few weeks then it may
have hatched already. If there was only a small amount of spawn
it can be difficult to spot the few tadpoles which emerge - they
are very easily camouflaged amongst silt or vegetation.
