Continual spawn failure:
Occasionally people report that the spawn in their ponds dies /
breaks down year after year. Often, it's just a case of a run of
bad luck - different things have been affecting the spawn each
year - but sometimes the reasons are less clear.
In these
situations the first thing to do is establish where the problem
lies. You can do this by removing some of the spawn that is laid
and keeping it in a bucket of rain water (or tap water that has
been left to stand for at least a day). Do not keep it in water from the pond. If
the spawn survives and hatches into tadpoles then this indicates
there may be a problem with the pond (too shaded, something
getting in to the water, etc) which can hopefully be rectified.
However, if the spawn continues to fail then this could indicate
that there's a problem with the fertility of the frogs
themselves - a much harder issue to deal with. Please get in
touch to report this problem.
