Dragon Finder

Barnmead Road Allotments

Fourteen allotment holders attended the workshop including two young families. We were lucky with the weather, with the sun shining and the temperature nudging 30 degrees! So, with lots of sun cream applied and water to hand, we began. By the end everyone could tell their frog from their toad, their slow worm from their grass snake and some had already downloaded our Dragon Finder App!

Figure 1: Top-Bottom Right; Taking shade from the sun whilst we learnt about species identification, Exuvia left on the pond vegetation, the whole team seeing what we could spot in the pond!

We then had a tour around the site and found five small wildlife ponds and a larger communal wildlife pond. Advice and tips were offered for its management and with the help of the keen-eyed youngsters we spotted six exuvia (empty larval cases) which were probably all dragonfly cases.
