Water
is crucial for all life on Earth. As freshwater it exists in
lakes and rivers, as well as in man-made features like
reservoirs, canals, ditches, ponds and gravel pits.
These habitats are disappearing. In the UK alone more than one
third of ponds have disappeared in the latter half of the last
century and of those that remain, 80% are thought to be in ‘poor’ or
‘very poor’ condition*.
Froglife, together with a number of other conservation
organisations, is trying to tackle these declines.
We are lead
partner in the London Standing Water Habitat Action Plan and
also in the Cambridgeshire Pond Habitat Action Plan. In doing
this Froglife and others are saving the enormous variety of
species that call freshwater home: from common frog to
kingfisher, from water vole to water mint.
And our work benefits
people too, by encouraging local communities to get involved.
