We have been awarded a development grant from the Heritage
Lottery Fund to further develop the Leapfrog project for a
second round grant submission. In addition to awarding us with a
grant, the Heritage Lottery Fund has also appointed a mentor to
support us during the development phase.
The development phase will focus on the following four
objectives:
To identify our eight Leapfrog schools and
design their Flagship ponds for wildlife and learning.
To gauge and establish support and community interest in
creating Leapfrog community ponds.
To create an activity framework for the project to plan training
and other activities.
To create a monitoring and
evaluation strategy that is both effective and manageable.
We have selected and are currently working with eight schools in
the East of England. These schools are: Cavell, Woodton and
Hemblington schools in Norfolk; Voyager and Newark Hill schools
in Peterborough and Highfield, Sandringham and Wroxton schools
in Hertfordshire.
The Leapfrog project will create high quality Flagship wildlife
ponds within the grounds of these schools. The selected schools
have demonstrated a strong commitment to outdoor learning and
the aims of the project and provide a fantastic opportunity to
demonstrate the value of ponds for amphibians and other wildlife
as well as a resource for life long learning.
We will train teachers, teaching assistants, PTA members and
site staff and parents to provide the skills needed to ensure
that the ponds are managed effectively, and that the ponds are
used as learning resource for the school and the wider
community.
These eight Flagship ponds will provide learning opportunities
to local communities, inspiring them to create their own
Leapfrog Community ponds. Froglife project officers will support
and inspire these local communities to dig their own ponds
through workshop events and seasonal training. The project will
seek to create of wildlife ponds for all to use for learning
and enjoyment.
