School grounds can easily be adapted to benefit local wildlife,
whether it's a whole conservation area, complete with pond and
hibernaculum, or just a little corner that's left to grow wild.
Involving young people in the planning, design and maintenance
of these areas can help create a sense of ownership, as well as
providing an opportunity to learn about what habitats encourage
different species on to school grounds.
Ponds needn't be a safety risk - fences or pond covers can make
them completely safe areas for children to learn about the
wonders of life underwater. So grab a spade and get digging!

There are plenty of garden features, such as compost heaps and
log piles that can be included on school grounds which will
benefit amphibians and reptiles.
