We are currently in the process of collating the locations of
wildlife crossing installations across the UK (not just those
for toads). Based on
information from ecologists, local planning authorities and the
general public, we have begun plotting these on our interactive
map below.
If you know of a wildlife crossing installation that has not
been plotted so far, please email
silviu.petrovan@froglife.org with further details.
Wildlife tunnels and green bridges may be installed to mitigate
the environmental impact of new road development. However the
sparsely populated map highlights an obvious problem: for the
245,000 miles of roads in Britain, there are thought to be less
than 100 wildlife crossings currently installed (at best that’s
1 for every 2500 miles of road).
An additional concern is that shortly after their installation,
many crossings are not maintained and quickly fall into a state
of disrepair. Through this process we are also reporting on the
state of existing crossings, with the help of our network of
dedicated
Toad Patrols. This will enable better monitoring and
maintenance of Britain’s Wildlife Crossings in the future,
contributing to our
EU Toads on Roads Partnership, as well as
informing the development of future installations.
