The Discovering Dewponds team would like to thank everyone who attended our Southeast Toad Summit on 28th January. We had an excellent day with brilliant talks from Hugh Warwick, our very own Jenny Tse-Leon, trustee Xavier Mahele and Brighton toad patroller Paolo Oprandi. We also had some great stands to peruse from Anne at Hedgehog Havens and Amanda from Kent ARG who provided examples of equipment that you might need for a toad patrol. The talks were followed by a very useful breakout session where attendees answered some useful toad patrol questions and tips.
The top tips for patrollers included ‘Take a phone’ ‘Be safe on the roads’, ‘Have a good torch’ but most importantly there were lots of suggestions to just have fun and bring lots of enthusiasm!
There were some useful suggestions for support for patrollers including pairing up inexperienced and experienced patrollers, education on ID, ecology and H&S and tips on how to answer questions from the public.
We loved the suggestions for why we should love toads. These included ‘Only have two toad species in the UK’, ‘They eat slugs’, ‘great indicators for water quality’, ‘Part of a healthy ecosystem’, ‘Important for witches(!)’. And most importantly ‘They’re cool’, we certainly think so!
We’ll publish some more tips and suggestions from the day on our website and social media over the coming months. Thank you again to everyone who came for your contributions.
Special thanks also to Jane for all the lovely cakes and James for helping with the IT!
