Froglife introduced it’s new Scottish Dragon Finder project in Scottish Parliament last week with presentations from several key speakers including MSP and Species Champion John Wilson and University of Glasgow Professor Roger Downie. Local Edinburgh school-children were also in attendance as winners of Froglife’s Dragon Finder story-writing competition were awarded.
The evening was a great success with many different organisations coming along to find out more about the Scottish Dragon Finder project and why our amphibian and reptile friends need our help! It was a fantastic opportunity for Froglife staff to meet representatives from local councils, volunteer groups, conservation organisations and funders among many others to discuss the new project.
In the lead up to the event, Froglife held a writing competition with local schools in Edinburgh where children were asked to creatively think about what it would be like being a ‘Dragon’ species! All the entries were amazing with the children’s efforts being truly inspiring. One of the winning entries presented on the evening is below:
Learn to love yourself by Lucy Adair (Sciennes Primary)
I lie on my favourite branch, lazing in the sun,
I jump and play around the old oak tree having so much fun,
I swim in the lily pad pond till I’m tired to the bone,
I sometimes wonder to myself why I’m so alone.
I listen to the sweet songs of the birds in the trees,
I walk along the pebbly path, breathing in that early morning breeze,
I pounce onto my yummy morning breakfast, ready for my feast,
I look at myself in the river, and wonder why people think I’m such a beast.
I then think to myself a funny little thought,
I am who I want to be though I’m warty and short,
I climb up and up until I get to my usual sleeping spot,
I am now a frog who knows you should love yourself no matter what.
Froglife would like to thank John Wilson MSP for sponsoring the event and all those who attended to make the evening a great success!
