Sponsor a Pond for £50, or more

To address the estimated 50% decline in pond habitats in the UK over the past century, with 80% of those remaining being classified as either in ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ condition, Froglife is creating and restoring ponds in several regions of the United Kingdom.  You can help us to do even more by donating £50 (or your chosen amount) and sponsoring a pond. If you are purchasing the Sponsor a Pond as a gift for someone else you can download a certificate with their name to give to the lucky person. If you provide us with the recipients contact details we can send them our pond monitoring reports.

Why sponsor a pond? Ponds are vital habitats for amphibians (frogs, toads and newts); amphibians must have suitable freshwater habitats including ponds to breed and spawn, and for the young to develop.  If there is insufficient freshwater the species will decline and eventually become extinct.  We have witnessed huge declines in our native toad populations, with Froglife’s research showing a 68% decline over a 30 year period.  This is largely attributable to habitat loss.  Freshwater also supports a lot of other wildlife including reptiles, small mammals, birds, a wide variety of invertebrates such as dragonflies and mayflies, and aquatic plants.

Freshwater habitats provide many other benefits such as acting as carbon sinks that offset some of the negative impacts of climate change. They dampen noise in highly populated urban areas and also act as flood defences.  Ponds and other freshwater bodies provide aesthetically pleasing areas which are very beneficial for peoples’ mental and physical well-being.

Depending on size and condition, pond restoration costs…and pond creation costs can be between £3,000 and £8,000.
