London T.O.A.D visited Longton Nursery Allotments in Spring 2021. The site has a well established pond that is in the centre of the allotment and a neighbouring bog garden. The pond itself was full of 50+ smooth newts all doing their courtship displays! The team gave an amphibian and reptile identification course and covered how encouraging these species on an allotment help with pesticide-free pest control. It was positive to find that the site is already pro-wildlife, with resident foxes and more! As a group, we took the time to observe the newts in the pond and explained to the holders what each of these behaviours were and they said that the newts now had a special place in their hearts. The team had a wonderful time at the site and left with a handful of rhubarb too!
