Scotland is a special place full of beauty and home to some amazing reptile and amphibian species. Froglife has been creating and restoring habitats across hundreds of sites in Scotland since 2008.
Current Projects:
Coalface to Wildspace Scotland is our latest project working in Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and the Lothians. The project is currently in it’s development phase, we hope that this will be successful and the project will be awarded funding to be delivered in the near future. We aim to work across 14 sites, create 54 new ponds, restore 25 ponds and improve 24 surrounding habitats. Watch this space!
We expanded our Green Pathways Project to Glasgow in 2014 with it still going strong years later. The project works with disadvantaged young people to help them improve their confidence, social skills and positive behaviour as well as learning more about the environment, increasing their enjoyment of the outdoors and improving their conservation skills.
Previous projects:
Fife Living Water ran from 2022-2023 resulting in some very impressive improvements to the local environment. These included the creation of 118 new ponds, the restoration of 11 ponds and the creation of 29 terrestrial habitats. The project also worked with schools, local businesses and the community to help make this all happen and trained 100 volunteers in reptile and amphibian conservation techniques.

Froglife ran the Come Forth for Wildlife project from 2019-2023 which worked throughout Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire. See all the details in the project report here.
Green Pathways for Life also ran in Glasgow from 2018-2019. The project worked with people living with dementia to encourage use and improvement of local green spaces, learning about wildlife, reducing social isolation, improving confidence and empowering people living with dementia to live well through outdoor activities.

The Scottish Dragon Finder project concluded in June 2018 having run successfully from January 2014. The Scottish Dragon Finder project created new habitat for reptiles and amphibians, hosted interactive educational sessions and improved the data recording for reptiles and amphibians across many different areas of Scotland.
The Living Water project in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire (Glasgow and North Lanarkshire Living Water) ran from 2009-2013. The project succeeded in delivering the creation and restoration of pond habitats in a variety of habitats, engaging local communities about reptile and amphibian conservation and offering training and volunteering opportunities to local people.
There are six amphibian species and four reptile species that call Scotland their home:
Amphibians
Reptiles
These species all suffer from loss of habitat through drainage and development, degradation of habitat quality through neglect and pollution, spread of disease and the spread of non-native species among other factors in Scotland. You can find out more about amphibians and reptiles through Froglife’s Urban Tails booklet here Scottish Urban Tails.
Our work in Scotland was awarded the ‘highly commended’ award for Rebuilding Biodiversity in 2012 from Biffa Awards. Froglife is also a member of the Scottish Environment LINK
