FACT delivers practical conservation projects to young offenders, helping develop their basic skills whilst giving something back to the local community.

FACT (formerly the Peterborough Environment Enrichment Project) is an established and successful project delivered by Froglife on behalf of the Peterborough Youth Offending Service (YOS).

The young offenders carry out practical conservation activities as part of their reparation order (similar to 'community service'). These tasks help develop their basic skills, including their social skills, practical skills, literacy and numeracy. Learning in this way helps to increase confidence and self-esteem and many participants develop a genuine interest and enthusiasm in the natural environment. These young people can be directed on to our Green Pathways scheme or the Wildlife Ambassadors project.

Trained volunteers from 'Better Together' provide further support for the young people and local support has come from Cross Keys Homes and Mears through the provision of premises for some sessions.

The project works closely with a number of environmental and wildlife organisations, Peterborough City Council and local community groups to develop a wide range of projects for the young people.

The types of activity the young people have been involved with include:

O The development of a wildlife allotment site (containing several wildlife ponds and a butterfly garden amongst other things).
O Habitat management at Hampton Nature Reserve.
O A graffiti project where the young people used their artistic skills to learn more about amphibians and reptiles.
O The creation of a pond and wildlife area in Wisdom Wood at Peterborough Garden Park.
